Video Transcript

Hello. This is Jack from tofluency.com and in this English lesson, I’m going to explain what overhear something means – to overhear something. Now, I made a video recently where I talked about overhearing someone say I’m okay, thank you. Now, you can get the link to that video below but in this video, I’m going to focus on explaining what this phrase means.

So, when you overhear something it means that you hear something from a conversation that you’re not involved in. So, you’re not having a conversation with someone, instead, you’re listening to what they’re saying. Now, this can happen by chance, you know, if you’re in a busy area, let’s say on a train, and someone is having a conversation near you, then you overhear certain things that they say. So, this is what happened to me: I overheard someone saying something.

Now, while doing my research for this video, I found a very interesting feature in a magazine or on this website – in Time Out London. What they do is they have people email in what they overhear in London, and I’m going to read a few of these to you because some of them are quite funny: the first one is which way do these stairs go, up or down, or can you use them both ways? I hate yoga – it’s so stressful. I like ugly people but they have to be ugly in a certain way.

Now, something that’s quite similar to overhearing something is when that you are in a busy area or you can be anywhere really and you watch people do their normal daily activities. You watch people go by. Now, this is called people watching. So, this is where you see people doing things and they don’t really see you. Now, I love to do this when I’m on vacation or sometimes as well in my local city. It’s fun just to watch the people go by and to watch people do what they do.

Now, what I want to know is this do you like to people watch? And also, do you overhear conversations when you’re traveling or at part during your day? Please let me know in the comments section and also let me know if you have any questions about what I have discussed in this lesson. So, thank you for watching!
