EVERYDAY ENGLISH: GOING TO THE GYM (LEARN NEW PHRASES)

english gym exercise learn

I recorded this lesson just after a workout.

You’re going to learn some cool words and phrases related to going to the gym.

Watch the video and then read the lesson notes.

I FORGOT TO PUT ON SUNSCREEN

As you probably noticed, my face was a little red.

That’s because I forgot to put on (apply) sunscreen. Here are more examples:

  • I need to put on a little makeup before we leave
  • Wow! You’ve put on a lot of perfume!

I TRY TO WORK OUT EVERY DAY

To work out means to exercise. We tend to use this when talking about exercise in the gym.

  • I haven’t worked out for ages!
  • I feel great after working out

(see all my phrasal verb lessons here)

I’VE BEEN GOING EVERY DAY EXCEPT FOR SATURDAY

I used the present perfect continuous here because I used a continuous verb (go) and I was talking about an action that started in the past and continues in the present.

Here are more examples:

  • He’s been acting a little strange recently
  • They’ve been working at that company for 2 years

MAKE SOMETHING A PRIORITY

To make something a priority means that you ensure it’s one of the most important things in your life.

Like I said, it’s important to make English a priority when setting goals.

Here is a video I made on that:

CARDIO, STRENGTH TRAINING, AND STRETCHING

We use the verb do when talking about these things. For example:

  • I’m going to do some strength training today
  • I did a lot of cardio yesterday
  • Let’s do some stretching before the game

REPS AND SETS

A rep is one complete movement. For example, if you’re bench pressing, it’s lowering the bar to your chest and then pressing it back up again.

A set is a group of reps.

I normally do 3 sets of 5-10 reps.

WRITE DOWN YOUR PROGRESS

I keep notes on my progress.

For example, I write down how many reps and sets I did and at what weight.

Do you take notes when learning English?

I’VE NEVER RUN A MARATHON BEFORE

I used the present perfect here because I’m talking about experiences.

Here are more examples:

  • I’ve never been to Asia
  • Have you played soccer before?
  • Have you seen Star Wars before?

PUSH THROUGH AND GO THAT EXTRA MILE

To push through means to continue doing something even though it’s difficult.

Like I said, motivating music can help you push through.

To go that extra mile has a similar meaning.

I PUT ON WEIGHT LAST YEAR

To put on weight means to gain weight. Here is a video on this:

I EXERCISE TO LOOK GOOD (OR BETTER!)

To look good means to have a good physical appearance.

I exercise to feel better, for my health and to look good. Or at least, to look better!

Here is a lesson on this phrase:
