Hello, everybody! This is jack from tofluency.com and in this English lesson, we’re going to look at the phrasal verb ‘grow up’. So, firstly I’m going to show you how I used this phrasal verb in a different video,and then I’m going to give you plenty of examples. So, let’s have a look at the clip now:

However, the most popular sport in the UK is football. I grew up playing football, I grew up watching football… In the video I said, however, the most popular sport in the UK is football. I grew up playing football, I grew up watching football. So, to grow up doing something means to spend your childhood doing something. I spent my childhood playing and watching football, therefore, I can say I grew up playing and watching football.

Here is another example: I grew up in Preston, Lancashire. So, I spent my childhood in Preston, Lancashire. Here is another example: growing up in New York was tough. Now, this example looks at using grow up in a different way, okay, are you ready? He needs to grow up. In this case, it means this person needs to be more mature – to act more like an adult. So, you can use it in this way as well.

Here is a quote that uses grow up: “We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.” “We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.” This is a quote by Brian White.
