How to Get English Speaking Practice Online

(Note: If you want to reach a high level of English, click here.)

Do you want to be able to practice your English speaking online?

I imagine you do.

But, even though there are so many free tools available to practice online (Skype, Google Hangouts etc.), it is still difficult to find people to practice with.

That is why I created the video below.

In the video, you will learn how you can find people to practice your English with online.

The Majority of English Learners Ask for Online Conversation the Wrong Way

I am a teacher of English, have a popular website, and I’m also very active on social media. And every day I receive emails or messages that say something like:

“I need to practice my English. Want to talk on Skype?”

My answer?

No.

Other teachers that I’m friends with get the same messages, and give the same answer.

Don’t get me wrong: I want to help as many English learners as possible. My big goal is to help YOU reach an advanced level with your English.

But I, and other teachers, can’t do this by speaking to everyone who asks for it. We are busy – everyone is busy – and if we don’t know you, or if you are not offering us anything in return (mutual friendship or payment for a lesson), then we won’t take 20 minutes out of our day to help you practice your speaking.

We just don’t have the time for it.

But the good news is this: There is a much better way to approach this and find people to practice with.

What Should I Do Instead? How Can I Get Speaking Practice Online?

In a nutshell (summary): Be interesting, build relationships slowly, and become FRIENDS with English speakers.

If you are looking for ways to practice (and not spend money on lessons), then this is what you have to do to get the speaking practice you need.

Let’s look at an example…

PenPal World is a popular site where you can talk with people from all around the world. Many English learners use this site to try and get speaking practice.

But the majority of learners do this the wrong way; they:

  • Post a profile talking about how they need to improve their English
  • Message English speakers asking them if they would like to meet on Skype

Just like how other teachers and I don’t agree to meet on Skype for 20 minutes (for free), people on this site will ignore these common requests. This is because there is nothing in it for them.

The fact is that people are interested in how a relationship (no matter how big or small) can benefit both parties.

So, instead of doing what most English learners do, do THIS on sites like PenPal World:

  • Write a profile about yourself that is interesting to read
  • Search for people who have similar interests to you
  • Message these people introducing yourself, talk about common interests, and ask them a couple of questions.
  • Build up a relationship slowly; don’t ask them to Skype straight away
  • When the time is right, ask them if they would like to chat online

Do you see the difference between this method and what most people do?

This way you will get responses. But also, something beautiful will happen…

You will build long-lasting friendships with people who speak English AND have similar interests to you.

This means that you will have more opportunities to practice, you will talk about things that you like talking about, and you will make meaningful relationships with people from different cultures.

You can use this method:

  • On Facebook or other social media sites
  • For finding language exchange partners
  • On any online group that you belong to
  • And you can use these principles when meeting people in your local area too

Here is one last tip: Think about ways that you can help English speakers.

I once needed help with my website, and someone in my English learning community offered to give me some advice. I got some great information, and he got some English speaking practice (and some corrections too!).

What can you offer?
