In this lesson, I show how I used the phrase make excuses in one of my videos, and then give more examples.

Make Excuses

In the example I gave, I said the following:

“If you’re saying those kinds of things, then you’re only making excuses.”

(The clip was taken from this video.)

To make excuses is to give false reasons for why you can’t do something. Here are two more examples:

  • “Manchester United’s manager always makes excuses for why they lose.”
  • Teacher: “Stop making excuses and do your work!”

Making an excuse is different from giving a reason. A reason is valid, an excuse is a false reason.
