In this video lesson, I talk about something very important: anxiety when learning English. I give two tips on how to make yourself feel better about your level and what you should focus on.

In this English lesson, I want to talk about anxiety because I know a lot of learners who you feel anxious about their English and if they are improving their level. And I understand this because I have gone through similar things and I have this anxiety (anxious) feeling as well but just in different areas. For example, I have an online business and this is my source of income.

This is what do full-time, and there are many times – many days – when I feel anxious about my business. I feel anxious because I want to be here and I’m here. I want to reach these big goals. I want to get more income. I want more subscribers. I want more people following me. I want to do better in my videos and everything I do. And I have this anxious feeling because I’m here and I want to be here. However, this feeling can really stop you. It can paralyze you from taking action and enjoying what you do, so when I get this feeling I do a couple of things. Firstly, I look at how far I have come. I look back one year and compare where I was one year ago to

Firstly, I look at how far I have come. I look back one year and compare where I was one year ago to where I am now. That’s my dog outside, by the way, I get anxious about making videos because I have two dogs and they love to bark. And that’s another form of anxiety: thinking about… can I make videos today? So, just to go back why I do is I think back one year ago, six months ago, and compare where I was to where I am today.

The second thing I do is I put my focus on the daily tasks. I focus on enjoying the things I have to do on a daily basis to get here. This is exactly the same for you learning English, because I know that you’re going to feel anxious about your level and where you want to be. You want to have a high level of English and you compare where you are now to where you want to be, and it gives you that horrible feeling. It makes you feel frustrated and anxious. But what you can do is compare yourself to where you were a year ago and think about how much you have learned… how much you have

But what you can do is compare yourself to where you were a year ago and think about how much you have learned… how much you have improved your English. Now, if you haven’t improved your English that much, just focus on what you can do today. Focus on your daily tasks. Think about the fluency equation which is the
methods you use times by the amount of time you spend using them, and try to create a plan that works for you. A plan that is enjoyable… one that is going to help you improve and then put your focus on what you do on a daily basis.

Having a goal and thinking about where you want to be is great. It can help you feel motivated for learning english. But if you focus too much on the difference between where you are now and where you want to be, then it’s going to make you feel terrible. It’s going to make you feel really anxious so, instead, put your focus
on the daily tasks. Enjoy what you do on a daily basis. Make sure you’re doing the right things so you’re not wasting your time and just keep making progress, keep enjoying the journey.
